▉ Brief
Create a disruptive independent media brand which gives the Middle East's next generation a voice to shape their culture.
▉ Creative Process
Comissioned for our outsider perspective, initial audience research showed that the Arabic youth are reluctant to believe mainstream media platforms, craving a more transparent view of world events. Our testing also highlighted they are torn between aligning with Western aesthetics, while still staying true to their authentic regional culture.
In response, I pitched and directed the project around the idea of ownership; celebrating both community as well as individuality with a bold honest energy. Using a visual language of stickers, imperfection and expression, it allows even the smallest moments to feel authentically re-claimed. Spanning so many themes of content, there is always flexibility for it to be loud and proud, liftstyle centric, or slick and curated.
As a new IP, we set a branded house architecture which builds recognition across it's diverse strands, while also accommodating reactive off-shoots to suit their fast moving culture. Living on multiple social media platforms, I lead the brand identity with dual-language fonts to reach the Western-Arab youth, and an emphasis on motion graphic systems. A mix of After Effects, MOGRT and CGI files provided their content creators a suite of adaptable assets for efficient production, stunning visual quality and importantly, strong brand integrity.
▉ Result
Taking the identity from a toolkit with 115 templates to real life content, it has positively influenced the aesthetic of their podcast set designs and attitude ShababZi's in-house team brings to growing the brand. As ShababZi establishes it's roster of creator talent, brand roll out has been gentle.
The Arabic youth want regional culture balanced with a progressive, confident brand identity. Celebrating ownership through individual expression as well as a sense of community does just that.
Custom drawn, the logo's lettering sought to buck tradition; capturing the ever moving nature of the Arabic youth.
Digital natives are hyper aware (and put off) when brands get in the way of a content's authenticity. Social thumbnail designs were a vital trust-builder in sharing ShababZi's unfiltered essense and not over-branded or biased.
I lead with an emphasis on motion graphics; providing their creators a suite of flexible assets which played to the mantra of ownership, while keeping production and brand integrity high.
Further spotlighting ShababZi's belief of personal expression, I directed three idents which lift the brand from social media and give it a real life charm.
Put simply,
I want to do great work, for and with, great people.
